Hanafuda Koi-Koi: A Japanese Card Game Tradition
Hanafuda Koi-Koi is a classic Japanese card game. This guide provides an overview of its English rules.
Koi-Koi (こいこい), meaning "again and again" or "come on," is a two-player game using Hanafuda cards (traditional Japanese playing cards).
The objective is to create specific card combinations, known as "yaku," faster than your opponent. Players accumulate cards in a point pile by matching cards in their hand or drawn from a deck with cards already on the table. Once a yaku is formed, a player can choose to stop and score points or continue playing ("koi-koi") to accumulate more yaku for a higher score. Individual card point values don't directly affect the final score, but they aid in identifying valuable yaku combinations.
