Phỏm Ta La - Tien Len Online: A Popular Vietnamese Card Game

Phỏm (also known as Ta La or Tu Lo Kho) is a widely played card game in Vietnam, particularly popular in the northern regions. "Ta La" is the Southern term, while "Phỏm" is used in the North. The game involves strategic card collection and discarding to create sets ("Phom") and minimize the point value of remaining cards. Using a standard 52-card deck and diverse gameplay, Phỏm offers engaging entertainment, making it a staple at family gatherings and celebrations.

Key Terminology:

• Phom: A set of three or more cards of the same suit with consecutive values, or three cards of the same rank.
• Junk Cards: Cards not part of any Phom.
• Ù (Hu): A player with three Phoms (no junk cards) wins immediately.
• Stomach (Cơ): The remaining undealt cards.
• Móm: A player unable to form any Phoms at the end of the game.
• Take the Pin (Ăn Cược): Taking an opponent's discarded junk card in the final round.
• Send (Gửi): Adding a discarded card to an opponent's Phom in the final round (this card doesn't count against the player's score).
• Compensation (Bồi): If a player takes a pin, and another player subsequently achieves Ù, the pin-taker pays a penalty. Three consecutive cards also trigger compensation.
• Re (Rê): After playing cards, if another player makes a move, the played cards are returned, and the original player gets another turn.

Gameplay:

• Players: 2-4 players. The dealer (or previous round winner) receives 10 cards; others receive 9. Remaining cards form the "Stomach."
• Turns: Play proceeds counter-clockwise, starting with the dealer.
• Play: The first player discards a card. Subsequent players can either take the discarded card if it completes a Phom, or draw a card from the Stomach. After taking or drawing, a card is discarded.
• Game End: The game ends when a player achieves Ù, or after four rounds if no one achieves Ù.
• Final Round: Players must complete their Phoms, send cards where possible, and discard their final card. Remaining junk cards determine the scores.

Scoring (when no player achieves Ù):

• The lowest score wins.
• A, J, Q, K count as 1, 11, 12, 13 respectively. Other cards have face value.
• Ties are broken by who discarded their cards first.
• Final score calculation:
  • 1st place: +6 points
  • 2nd place: -1 point
  • 3rd place: -2 points
  • 4th place: -3 points
  • Pin taker: -4 points
  • Pin receiver: +4 points
  • Ù player: +15 points (other players lose 5 points each)
  • Player with no Phoms: Loses 4 points to the winner.
