Each 100-card deck blends reprints with fresh Final Fantasy-themed art and brand-new cards designed for Commander gameplay. The unique twist? Each deck is dedicated to a single Final Fantasy game, allowing for deep dives into their respective lore and iconic moments.

Deck Selection and Design:

Senior Game Designer Daniel Holt explains the selection process: While FFVII and FFXIV were easy choices, FFVI and FFX were selected based on team favorites and gameplay potential. The entire development team's passion for Final Fantasy fueled the project's success.

The FFVII deck balances nostalgia for the original with the modern aesthetics of the Remake trilogy, primarily following the 1997 narrative. Principal Narrative Game Designer Dillon Deveney highlights the fusion of original and modern interpretations in the art.

FFVI, with its pixel art origins, presented a unique challenge. The team collaborated directly with the FFVI team, blending elements from original concept art, sprites, and the Pixel Remaster to create updated character designs for Magic.

Commander Choices and Deck Strategies:

Choosing commanders wasn't straightforward. While Cloud (FFVII) was a natural fit, other choices involved careful consideration. Terra (FFVI), Tidus (FFX), and Y'shtola (FFXIV) were ultimately selected based on popularity and strategic alignment with their respective games. Y'shtola's deck, specifically, reflects her Shadowbringers arc.

Deck color identities were carefully chosen to reflect both the game's themes and desired gameplay. All four decks incorporate White, facilitating the inclusion of a wide range of heroes. FFVI focuses on graveyard recursion, FFVII combines equipment strategies with environmental elements, FFX utilizes the Sphere Grid system, and FFXIV emphasizes spellcasting.

Beyond the Commanders, each deck features beloved characters from their respective games as legendary creatures and spell components.

Release and Collector's Editions:

The Final Fantasy set launches June 13th. Each of the four Commander decks will be available in regular ($69.99 MSRP) and Collector's Edition ($149.99 MSRP) versions, with the latter featuring Surge foil treatment for all 100 cards. Holt confirms that all sixteen mainline Final Fantasy games will be represented across the accompanying products.
