Nintendo Goes All In on Donkey Kong Redesign Seen in Nintendo Switch 2 and Mario Kart 9 First Look
Nintendo's significant redesign of Donkey Kong, initially glimpsed in the Mario Kart 9 gameplay shown during the Nintendo Switch 2 reveal, is now confirmed across multiple platforms. For years, Donkey Kong's design remained consistent across titles like Mario Kart 8, Mario Tennis, and Donkey Kong Country Returns. However, Nintendo is embracing a new aesthetic, one that many believe mirrors the character's successful portrayal in The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
This revamped Donkey Kong wasn't limited to the Mario Kart 9 trailer. As reported by Nintendo Life, and shared on Reddit by user cookiemaster221, a line of new Donkey Kong merchandise showcases this updated look. The change is notable: his previously furrowed brow is now softer and more rounded.
Reddit users reacted with a mix of opinions. Some commented on the friendlier, more "chill" appearance, comparing the transformation to a reversed "Kirby treatment." Others expressed nostalgia for the original, more intense expression, appreciating its blend of kindness and strength. However, several users found the new design acceptable, suggesting it aims for a more playful, less aggressive image.
The merchandise offers a clearer view of the redesign than the brief, somewhat obscured appearances in the Mario Kart 9 footage. A more comprehensive look at Donkey Kong's updated role is expected in April during a Nintendo Direct specifically focused on the Switch 2.
The Switch 2 reveal trailer itself provided limited details about the console's features. While primarily showcasing its visual design, it did confirm backward compatibility, highlighted a mysterious new button on the Joy-Cons, and validated fan theories regarding controller-as-mouse functionality.
