Xbox Game Pass Price Hike and New Tier Announced: Expanding Reach, Increasing Costs
Microsoft has announced price increases for its Xbox Game Pass subscription service, alongside a new subscription tier. This move reflects Xbox's strategy of expanding Game Pass's availability while also adjusting pricing.
Price Changes Effective:
- July 10, 2024 (New Subscribers): The new pricing will immediately impact new subscribers of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, PC Game Pass, and Game Pass Core.
- September 12, 2024 (Existing Subscribers): Current subscribers will see the price changes reflected in their next billing cycle after September 12th. If their subscription lapses, they'll need to select from the updated plans.
New Pricing:
- Xbox Game Pass Ultimate: Increases from $16.99 to $19.99 per month. This tier includes PC Game Pass, Day One games, back catalog titles, online play, and cloud gaming.
- PC Game Pass: Increases from $9.99 to $11.99 per month, retaining Day One releases and other benefits.
- Game Pass Core: Annual price increases from $59.99 to $74.99, but remains at $9.99 per month.
- Game Pass for Console: Discontinued for new members starting July 10, 2024. Existing members can retain access as long as their subscription remains active. After September 18, 2024, the maximum stackable time for Game Pass for Console codes will be 13 months.
Introducing Xbox Game Pass Standard:
A new $14.99 per month tier, Xbox Game Pass Standard, offers access to a back catalog of games and online play, but excludes Day One games and cloud gaming. Further details on release dates and game availability will be announced soon.
Xbox's Broader Strategy:
Microsoft emphasizes providing choice and expanding access to gaming. Game Pass is now available on Amazon Fire Sticks, highlighting the move beyond traditional Xbox consoles. While acknowledging the importance of hardware, Microsoft confirms it will continue to offer physical games and consoles.
