Sony Turned Down The Order: 1886 Sequel Due to Critical Reception, Dev Says
Ready at Dawn's co-founder, Andrea Pessino, recently revealed that Sony rejected a proposed sequel to their PlayStation 4 title, The Order: 1886, citing the original game's lukewarm critical reception. Despite this, Pessino stated that Ready at Dawn had developed an "incredible" sequel pitch and would have accepted almost any terms to create it for their fans.
Released in 2015, The Order: 1886, a Victorian-era werewolf action game, boasted stunning visuals but received mixed reviews, primarily criticizing its gameplay limitations. Pessino confirmed the sequel pitch was submitted to Sony despite the initial game's performance, adding that Sony's rejection was ultimately beneficial, as the development conditions for a sequel would have been significantly worse than those of the original.
Pessino detailed a challenging relationship with Sony during the original game's development. Meeting the high graphical expectations set by Sony following early impressive demos proved difficult, leading to payment delays when Ready at Dawn prioritized other aspects of development. While Pessino acknowledged this as common practice for third-party publishers, it created significant friction.
Despite the strained relationship and the prospect of unfavorable terms, Ready at Dawn was prepared to accept a sequel's development under less-than-ideal conditions. Pessino explained that they were willing to endure a small budget and limited creative control simply to deliver a sequel to the dedicated fanbase. He emphasized the strong foundation laid in the first game, believing a sequel could have successfully built upon it.
The Order: 1886 concluded on a significant cliffhanger, fueling fan demand for a continuation. However, with Ready at Dawn's closure by Meta in 2024, the possibility of a sequel is now definitively gone. IGN's review of the original game (6/10) summarized its shortcomings: "Though a stylish adventure, The Order: 1886 emphasizes its cinematic polish at the crippling cost of gameplay freedom."
