Xbox's Phil Spencer to Continue Featuring PlayStation, Nintendo Logos at Microsoft Events

Microsoft has recently shifted its approach in showcasing its video games, notably by including logos of rival platforms like PlayStation 5 during Xbox events. This change became evident in the January 2025 Xbox Developer Direct, where games like Ninja Gaiden 4, Doom: The Dark Ages, and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 were announced with PS5 alongside Xbox Series X and S, PC, and Game Pass. This marks a significant departure from Microsoft's strategy during the June 2024 showcase, where Doom: The Dark Ages was initially announced without the PS5 logo, though later individual trailers included it. Similarly, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, the Diablo 4 expansion Vessel of Hatred, and Assassin's Creed Shadows were presented for Xbox Series X and S and PC, omitting the PS5.
In contrast, Sony and Nintendo maintain a more traditional approach. Sony's recent State of Play showcase focused exclusively on PlayStation, with games like Monster Hunter Wilds and Shinobi: Art of Vengeance showing only PS4 and PS5 logos, despite their availability on other platforms. Similarly, Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater and Onimusha: Way of the Sword were presented without mention of Xbox or PC. This reinforces Sony's strategy of emphasizing its consoles as the primary gaming platform.
Phil Spencer, Microsoft's gaming boss, addressed this shift in strategy during an interview with XboxEra. He emphasized transparency and honesty about where games are available, stating that Microsoft wants to ensure gamers know on which platforms they can play their titles. Spencer highlighted the importance of games being accessible on various screens, acknowledging that not all platforms offer the same capabilities, especially in terms of cloud services and open platforms. He stressed that Microsoft's strategy allows them to create large-scale games while supporting their native Xbox ecosystem, emphasizing that games should be the central focus.
Looking forward, it's likely that future Xbox showcases, such as the anticipated June 2025 event, will continue to feature logos for PS5 and possibly the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. Games like Gears of War: E-Day, Fable, Perfect Dark, State of Decay 3, and the next Call of Duty may be shown with PS5 logos alongside Xbox. However, don't expect Sony and Nintendo to adopt a similar strategy anytime soon.
